Candle lighting begins

Saturday December 5th, 2009

The first of three Roscoe Village Candlelighting Ceremonies will be held this Saturday, December 5th.

The ceremony begins at 6:00 p.m.

Old-fashioned, authentic and genuinely beautiful, Christmas Candlelighting is our favorite time of the year.

With strolling Christmas carolers and horse-drawn carriage rides throughout the day, mulled cider and cookies in the evening and Santa Claus entertaining children in the afternoon, Christmas Candlelighting is the best time of year for a family visit to Roscoe Village.

As every year, the Candlelighting Ceremony begins just after dark at 6:00 p.m. with a special choir performance and dedication.

The ceremony lasts for thirty minutes as the candle light spreads from one candle to another until every candle in the village has been lighted and all have exchanged Christmas cheer.

For a glimpse of the ceremony from last year, view the video at right
to see 200 joyful visitors singing “Silent Night”
as the candle lightspreads through the crowd.

After the ceremony, all Roscoe Village shops are open for evening shopping.  And to help you celebrate the official beginning of the Christmas season, each restaurant is open late for dinner and drinks.

The Honorary Candle Lighter at the first ceremony will be State Representative Troy Balderson.

My wife, sister, brother-in-law and myself drove from Massillon to attend the candle lighting last night. We enjoyed it very much. Just a few suggestions (this is done in the spirit of helping, not being critical). The sound system was not working when the children’s choir sang. We could not hear anything. On the other hand when the women were singing before the ceremony began it was almost too loud–they were great. I would suggest that you have the choir sing before the ceremony and have the women lead the singing. I think it would flow much better and would get the crowd more involved. Frankly, people just started walking away when they started to light the candles. Thanks

    Hi Myron,
Thank you very much for your comments here about the first Candlelighting Ceremony of 2009. This event is beautiful and it’s our favorite time of the year in Roscoe Village.

We are very sorry that your family’s experience was affected like this.

We have held for some time that Roscoe Village needs new leadership. When such shoddy preparation and organization like this begins to be noticed by our visitors, we know it is time to take a very long look at how this place is being managed and prepared for you.

We promise to spend the next several months redoubling our efforts to improve the Roscoe Village experience for our visitors.

In the meantime, we hope you’ll take the time to visit us again very soon. Our next Candlelighting Ceremonies will be held on December 12th and December 19th — and we promise a dramatically improved experience for all.

    Sincerely,
    Sam Wereb
