<p><strong>Authentic Irish Soda Bread Recipe from Abberley House Irish B&amp;B</strong><br />
<em>Makes one loaf.  Serves four.</em></p>
<p>INGREDIENTS:<br />
<em>2 cups all-purpose flour<br />
1/2 teaspoon baking soda<br />
1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder<br />
2 Tablespoons sugar<br />
1/2 teaspoon salt<br />
3 1/2 Tablespoons real butter<br />
3/4 cup plus 2 Tablespoons buttermilk<br />
1 egg white</em></p>
<p>In a large bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt<br />
Cut the butter into the flour mixture with a pastry blender or 2 knives<br />
Add the buttermilk and mix thoroughly into a soft dough<br />
Knead the dough on a lightly floured board about 3 minutes or until smooth<br />
Form the dough into a 7-inch round ball, and place onto a lightly oiled cookie sheet<br />
Cut a cross about ½ inch deep in the center of the round<br />
Baste dough with egg white<br />
Bake in a 375 degree oven for 40 minutes<br />
Refrigerate before slicing<br />
Serve at room temperature or warmed in a microwave oven</p>
