Roscoe Village Fall Harvest Preview

July 11, 2009 by

Roscoe Village was founded in 1831 as a key shipping point for farm produce on the old Ohio & Erie Canal

Each fall at harvest time, farmers of yesteryear hauled their goods by wagon to Roscoe Village for shipping to hungry cities many miles away.

Today Roscoe Village is still situated in one of the most productive agricultural regions in Ohio.  The beautiful farms you see along the highway when you travel to Roscoe Village produce magnificent harvests every fall.

On Saturday August 8th, the Shoppes of Roscoe Village will celebrate our farm heritage with a Fall Harvest Preview.

Some of our best shops will be displaying new fall merchandise for you to preview and many local Coshocton County farmers will line the street with mid-season produce for you to enjoy– fresh from the farm.

UPDATE: The Roscoe Village Farmers Market is now held every Sunday from 11-3 on North Whitewoman Street in Roscoe Village.  Live music begins at 3:00 every Sunday on the Garden Court at the Warehouse Steak & Stein and you will find farm vendors in front of nearly every Roscoe Village shop all day.

Hummingbirds arrive in Roscoe Village

May 23, 2009 by

Every year, around Memorial Day weekend, Hummingbirds begin to return to Roscoe Village Ohio.

Hummingbirds nest along our tree-lined Whitewoman Street and among the surrounding hills.  They pollinate our prized Roscoe Village Pocket Gardens and buzz through The Garden Gate Shop to greet our shoppers.

Hummingbirds are among the most beautiful and mysterious of God’s creatures and we’re grateful to have them here.  That’s why we take steps to attract and provide a healthy habitat for them in Historic Roscoe Village.

Did you know that you can easily attract Hummingbirds to visit your home every year?

Hummingbirds have amazingly high metabolic rates to support their unusual manner of flight and they must feed constantly and consume enormous amounts of food to survive from season to season.

In fact, to survive even one night, a Hummingbird must consume more than its weight in nectar — every single day.

Knowing that the busy, hungry Hummingbird is constantly searching for good food sources, you can begin to attract Hummingbirds to your home garden simply by providing them with a reliable and attactive food source.

Hummingbirds prefer very colorful nectar-producing flowers – especially those in the red, orange and pink range.  Potted Geraniums and flowering Sage are among the best attractors for Hummingbirds, as are several annual flowering plants like Irises and Petunias

In addition to nectar from colorful flowers, Hummingbirds need good sources of fresh water.  One of the best ways to provide them with a good water and food supply is to place an attractive Hummingbird Feeder in your garden.

To find out how to attract Hummingbirds to your garden, stop at The Garden Gate Shop on your next trip to Roscoe Village.  We love to welcome these tiny creatures to our garden and we’ll be happy to show you how to bring them home to yours.

The smell of new leather

May 5, 2009 by

What is that wonderful smell?

This is almost always the first question we hear when new visitors step inside the River Ridge Leather Shop in Roscoe Village.

River Ridge Leather Co. is an authentic and completely traditional leatherworking shop.  We use only traditional hand-tools to cut, carve, stitch and stamp our leather goods.

All of our leather goods are made by hand, right here in our shop.  We never use machines to make them, and we start each new piece from 100% natural oak-tanned bridle leather from U.S. hides.

The signature aroma people find in our shop comes from the centuries-old natural oak tanning process used to make the new bridle leather we use to make our handmade leather goods.

Our exclusive leather supplier is Hermann Oak Leather in St. Louis. Hermann Oak Leather is internationally renowned for fashioning the bridles and harnesses for a world-famous beer maker’s signature Clydesdale team you might recognize.

You can always recognize high quality, natural oak-tanned leather goods by their wonderful aroma.  You won’t find them it at the mall.  You find them made by hand, one at a time, in Roscoe Village Ohio.

To see more of our handmade leather goods, 24/7 any day of the year, visit us online at RiverRidgeLeather.com

NOTE:  We love handmade goods of all kinds, and Roscoe Village is the place to find them.  Check out the new Ohio-made stoneware bird baths our neighbor carries at The Garden Gate shop here.
